Kanazawa, Japan’s quiet secret

What to do in Kanazawa

On Japan’s west coast, between the Sea of Japan and the Japanese Alps, Kanazawa offers beautifully preserved heritage, a strong craft tradition and excellent local food. Quieter than Kyoto, it gives you a different introduction to traditional Japan while remaining easily reached by train from Tokyo and Kyoto.

Visit Kenroku-en garden Considered one of Japan’s three finest landscape gardens, Kenroku-en embodies balance, carefully framed views and an appreciation of the seasons. Visit in the morning for fewer people. In winter, the structures protecting its pines create a distinctive local scene.

Explore Nagamachi’s samurai district Narrow lanes, earthen walls and canals survive in this former samurai quarter. The Nomura residence offers insight into the homes and way of life of the samurai in feudal times.

Discover the teahouse districts Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi are known for traditional wooden tea houses, reflecting the importance of the arts and entertainment in Japanese city life.

Traditional craftsmanship Kanazawa is a major centre of Japanese craft, particularly gold leaf, used in art, decorative work and food.

Taste the local cooking Proximity to the Sea of Japan brings superb fresh produce. At Omicho Market, discover fish, seafood and regional specialities. The city also has many kaiseki and traditional restaurants showcasing seasonal ingredients.

How long to stay One or two nights gives you time for the main sights and local food.

Why include Kanazawa? It is a rewarding stop for a deeper understanding of Japan at a quieter pace than the major cities,

combining gardens, historic districts, traditional craft and local cooking in one place.

We felt in safe hands from the start

The Caramage team, and Anne in particular, were wonderfully responsive. Their professionalism, warmth and willingness to listen put us at ease straight away. Everything felt effortless. We are from Canada and have recommended Caramage to two friends, who also loved their trips. We would recommend this agency without hesitation.
