Rural Japan, Naturally

Away from the crowds, closer to nature

A journey to make your own

A journey for those who want to explore beyond Japan’s classic routes, closer to nature, tradition and beautifully preserved villages. Begin in Nikko, a spiritual centre surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and deep forests. Continue to Kanazawa, a city of craftspeople, geisha districts and elegant gardens, with a quieter atmosphere than Kyoto. Then explore the less familiar Noto Peninsula, with its dramatic coast, fishing villages, seascapes and welcoming places to stay. Travel on to UNESCO-recognised Shirakawa-go and its gassho zukuri houses, then the Kiso Valley, an old samurai route lined with beautifully preserved post towns.

Finish in Koyasan, the centre of Shingon Buddhism: temples, cedar forests, vegetarian shôjin ryôri meals and a night in a shukubo, or temple lodging. A journey of remarkable beauty into a more intimate, timeless Japan.

We felt in safe hands from the start

The Caramage team, and Anne in particular, were wonderfully responsive. Their professionalism, warmth and willingness to listen put us at ease straight away. Everything felt effortless. We are from Canada and have recommended Caramage to two friends, who also loved their trips. We would recommend this agency without hesitation.
