Budgeting for Japan

What to budget for a journey of ten to 15 days

How much does a journey to Japan really cost?

The budget for a journey to Japan depends on several factors: the length of your stay, the season, your choice of accommodation and the experiences you would like to enjoy.

Contrary to a common perception, Japan need not be prohibitively expensive. With careful planning, a journey can remain reasonably priced while offering memorable experiences: nights in a traditional ryokan, ancient temples, exceptional food and spectacular landscapes between the sea and the mountains.

For a journey lasting ten to 15 days, here is an indication of the budget:

  • An accessible journey: €1,900 to €2,500 per person
  • A comfortable to premium journey: €3,000 to €4,500 per person
  • A high-end journey: €5,000 or more

These budgets generally include:

  • accommodation
  • transport within Japan, particularly Shinkansen trains and, depending on the itinerary, selected regional passes
  • selected activities and immersive experiences
  • practical services to make travelling easier, such as pocket Wi-Fi, a Suica travel card and a personalised travel guide
  • airport assistance on arrival
  • local assistance throughout your journey

International flights often add €800 to €1,200, depending on the season and departure city.

What shapes your budget?

Several factors can make a significant difference. Spring sakura and autumn maple colours are the busiest seasons, when hotel availability may be more limited. Accommodation also has a major influence. Japan offers everything from comfortable modern hotels to traditional ryokan, where you sleep on a futon and kaiseki meals are often included. Experiences add another dimension: time with a local guide, a tea ceremony, sumo training, less familiar neighbourhoods or an escape to the Japanese Alps. At Caramage, we work with carefully selected, trusted English-speaking guides who have lived in Japan for many years. Your route also affects the cost. Remote regions and particularly sought-after stays may require early booking.

A Japan journey to suit each traveller There are many ways to explore Japan: a first trip between Tokyo and Kyoto, a deeper journey into the Japanese Alps or a stay centred on food, nature or traditions. The key is a balanced itinerary that combines highlights with quieter, more personal moments.
