Useful things to know before and during your journey. Money and everyday payments Cash is still widely used, particularly in small shops, local restaurants and rural areas. Cards are accepted in major cities and international chains, but not everywhere. Carry some cash. ATMs in konbini such as 7-Eleven, Lawson and FamilyMart are generally dependable options. Phones and internet Public Wi-Fi exists but can be unreliable. An eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi makes maps, translation and bookings easier. An eSIM suits light travel; pocket Wi-Fi can be useful for several people or devices. Electricity and devices Japan uses 100V electricity and commonly has type A sockets with two flat pins. Check your devices’ voltage rating and plug type before travelling. A plug adaptor does not convert voltage. Luggage and easier transfers Travelling light makes stations and city transport simpler. Japan has efficient luggage delivery services between hotels. Consider using them when changing cities for a more comfortable journey. Finding your way Japanese addresses are based on blocks rather than streets, which can take getting used to. Mapping apps are invaluable; Google Maps is useful for routes and live timetables. Opening hours and daily rhythms Shops often open later in the morning and close relatively early. Restaurants may keep strict hours, especially in the evening. Plan meals and some visits in advance. Everyday etiquette Speak quietly on public transport, respect queues, remove shoes where required and avoid eating while walking. Observe those around you and follow their lead. Language and communication Levels of English vary. Helpful local people and translation tools make exchanges easier. Learn a few basic words and keep a translation app handy. Safety and peace of mind Japan is one of the world’s safest countries. Risky situations are uncommon and lost belongings are often returned. Travellers frequently feel at ease, even in the largest cities.

We felt in safe hands from the start
The Caramage team, and Anne in particular, were wonderfully responsive. Their professionalism, warmth and willingness to listen put us at ease straight away. Everything felt effortless. We are from Canada and have recommended Caramage to two friends, who also loved their trips. We would recommend this agency without hesitation.
