The essential entry information for planning your journey to Japan. Passport and entry conditions You need a valid passport. Visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport and the purpose and length of your stay. Check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance for your circumstances before departure. Japanese authorities check passports and entry details on arrival. When is a visa required? Visa exempt tourism is available to eligible passport holders. A visa is generally required for longer stays, work, internships, study or paid activities. Procedures and processing times depend on the visa category. Permitted length of stay Visa exempt entry allows a limited tourist stay. Immigration authorities confirm the permitted period on arrival. Respect that limit: overstaying can lead to penalties or refusal of entry on a future trip. Arrival procedures At the airport, all travellers pass through immigration, presenting their passport, providing personal information and undergoing identity checks. Procedures are well organised and generally straightforward, although queues can be longer at busy times. Onward tickets and supporting documents Have evidence of onward or return travel and accommodation for your stay available, as these may be requested on arrival. Travel insurance Although not compulsory, insurance covering medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation is strongly recommended. Japan offers excellent care, but costs can be substantial without suitable cover. Keep documents accessible Carry paper or digital copies of your passport, insurance and travel documents to make checks or replacement procedures easier if needed. Before departure Entry rules can change. Check official information a few weeks before travelling, including the requirements for your nationality and passport, to avoid unwelcome surprises.

We felt in safe hands from the start
The Caramage team, and Anne in particular, were wonderfully responsive. Their professionalism, warmth and willingness to listen put us at ease straight away. Everything felt effortless. We are from Canada and have recommended Caramage to two friends, who also loved their trips. We would recommend this agency without hesitation.
