Getting around Japan

Travelling around Japan

An introduction to transport in Japan, helping you understand the options and choose what works for your itinerary.

International and domestic flights Routes and flight times to Japan depend on your departure airport and airline, with direct flights or connections depending on the service. Domestic flights can quickly connect distant regions of the archipelago. They are reliable, but seldom necessary for a first journey focused on Honshu, the main island.

Travelling by train Rail is one of the most efficient ways to explore Japan. The extensive, exceptionally punctual network reaches most of the country. In major cities, particularly Tokyo and the Kansai region, trains and underground lines connect easily.

Japan Rail Pass and intercity trains The Japan Rail Pass offers unlimited travel on eligible JR services for a set period. It can be useful for itineraries covering several cities. The fast Shinkansen connects major cities quickly and comfortably, with seats facing the direction of travel.

Buses Buses offer an alternative, particularly in rural areas or for tighter budgets. Slower than trains, they remain reliable and well organised. Overnight services can save both daytime travel hours and a night’s accommodation.

When is a hire car useful? Hiring a car is possible but rarely essential. Driving is on the left, and roads can be narrow and congested, especially in cities. The documents required depend on where your driving licence was issued. Check the Japanese authorities’ requirements before arranging a hire car. A car can be useful in rural regions with limited public transport.

Taxis and city journeys Taxis are plentiful and easy to use in major cities. Doors open automatically, and it helps to have your destination written in Japanese. They are convenient for short distances but cost more than trains or the underground.

We felt in safe hands from the start

The Caramage team, and Anne in particular, were wonderfully responsive. Their professionalism, warmth and willingness to listen put us at ease straight away. Everything felt effortless. We are from Canada and have recommended Caramage to two friends, who also loved their trips. We would recommend this agency without hesitation.
